ESDC Accessible Templates
What it is
ESDC accessible templates are pre-designed PowerPoint templates created by the IT Accessibility Office (ITAO). These templates have built-in accessibility features including proper structure, readable fonts, good color contrast, and accessible layouts.
An accessible template provides a strong foundation for creating presentations that meet accessibility standards. It includes properly structured slide layouts, accessible color schemes, and appropriate text formatting.
Why it matters
Starting with an accessible template saves time and reduces accessibility errors. Templates ensure:
- Proper slide structure is built in from the start
- Color contrast meets accessibility requirements
- Fonts are readable and appropriately sized
- Layouts support assistive technology users
- Common accessibility pitfalls are avoided
Important: While accessible templates start you on the right path, accessibility verifications are still required to ensure no barriers are introduced as you add content.
How to use accessible templates
Finding ESDC accessible templates
The IT Accessibility Office has created accessible PowerPoint templates specifically for ESDC use. These are available through your organization's template library.
Steps to use the template
- Open the ESDC Accessible PowerPoint Template
- Navigate to and select "File" from the menu ribbon
- Navigate to and select "Save as"
- Select the current file type "PowerPoint Template (*.potx)", and change it to "PowerPoint Presentation (*.pptx)"
- Select your preferred save location and select the "Save" button
Finding other accessible templates
If you need a different layout, you can search for the term "Accessible" in the New Presentation dialogue box in PowerPoint to find other accessible templates from Microsoft.
What to verify after using a template
Templates provide a good starting point, but you should still verify:
- Slide titles are unique and descriptive
- Images have appropriate alternative text
- Reading order is logical
- Color contrast is maintained for any new content
- Charts and graphs are accessible
